Amyris Honored to Receive United Nations Association Global Citizen Award

EMERYVILLE, Calif., Oct. 30, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Amyris, Inc. (Nasdaq:AMRS), the industrial bioscience company, is pleased to announce it has been recognized by the East Bay Chapter of the United Nations Association (UNA) (www.unausa.org) with a Global Citizen Award during the UN's 70th Anniversary celebration and the UNA's 10th Annual Global Citizen Awards dinner held on October 25, 2015, at the University of California, Berkeley. Amyris received the award based on its contributions toward several aspects of the UN's overall Millennium Development Goals, which are aligned toward reversing the global poverty, hunger and disease affecting billions of people. Joel Cherry, President of Research and Development at Amyris, accepted the award for the company.

Amyris's founding purpose was to demonstrate that biotechnology can be used to help solve some of the world's most pressing problems, such as those outlined in the UN's overall Millennium Development Goals. Most notably, the company's pivotal work in creating a new source for artemisinic acid to boost global availability of a combination cure for malaria led to the production of 120 million curative doses by October 2014. Since then, Amyris has become a 'go to' source for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based, scarce or expensive chemicals. Products from the company's fermentation-based manufacturing system have demonstrated benefits in reducing cost, environmental footprint, and stabilizing supply for its partners and for its own direct-to-consumer products under its brands, Biossance™ (www.biossance.com) and Muck Daddy™ (www.muckdaddy.com).

"We are honored to receive this award highlighting what is integral to Amyris's core values ─ environmental, social and economic responsibility," said Joel Cherry, Amyris's President, Research and Development. "Amyris would also like to congratulate Dr. Tu Youyou, a 2015 Nobel Prize winner for her discovery of artemisinin and for giving us the opportunity to apply biotechnology to lower its cost and make it more available, thereby leading to thousands of children's lives having been saved from malaria." Continued Cherry, "As we have shown in first helping develop an anti-malarial drug, and subsequently in creating a portfolio of sustainably-sourced, high-performance products, Amyris's breakthrough science can potentially address some of the world's most daunting problems, improving the health and sustainability of our world."
